Though wild B. splendens can be found in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand, the stunning specimens we often see in captivity today are the result of selective breeding combining a variety of species. In Southeast Asia, B. splendens are typically found in rice paddies, ponds, and small streams, which tend to be shallow, slow-moving, quite warm, and dense in vegetatation.
