Species Information Profile: European Green Lizard (Lacerta viridis)

Species Summary: The European Green Lizard (Lacerta viridis) is a captivating reptile native to various regions of Europe, including Russia. These medium-sized lacertids are known for their vibrant green coloration and unique patterns. While traditionally considered a single species, recent genetic research has suggested they may comprise separate species. In captivity, both Western and Eastern forms are commonly kept. They are a European Protected Species, and responsible care is essential to their well-being.

Lifespan: European Green Lizards typically have a lifespan of 6 to 10 years in captivity, though some individuals may live longer with proper care.

Appearance: Adult European Green Lizards have a base color of green, with males often covered in fine black speckles, especially during the breeding season. Females can range from plain green to having pronounced blotches or reticulations in black. Hatchlings lack green coloration and may have two or four pale lines, which often become less pronounced as they grow.

Average Size: Adult European Green Lizards generally reach lengths of around 12 inches, although some individuals can grow up to 16 inches.

European Green Lizard Care:

Enclosure Size:

  • A glass enclosure with proper ventilation is recommended.
  • For a pair of European Green Lizards, an enclosure measuring at least 36 inches by 18inches is suitable for indoor housing. An ideal enclosure would be atleast 48"x24"x24".
  • Larger enclosures are necessary for outdoor vivaria.

What to Put in Their Enclosure:

  • Provide hiding places, a substantial sand heap for burrowing, and a clean water bowl.
  • Include branches, rocks, and open areas for basking.
  • Decorate with heaths, heathers, ornamental bushes, grasses, and ground cover plants in outdoor vivaria.

Temperature & Lighting:

  • Maintain a temperature gradient in the enclosure, with daytime temperatures of 77-86°F and a basking hotspot of around 104°F.
  • Nighttime temperatures should drop to around 59°F.
  • Provide UV lighting for at least 10-12 hours during the day, using a UVB bulb (10-12 percent).

Humidity:

  • Maintain moderate humidity around 40 percent, which can be achieved through morning spraying.
  • Use a hygrometer to monitor humidity levels.

Water:

  • Provide a shallow, clean water dish for drinking and mimic dew with morning spraying.
  • Regularly replace the water to prevent contamination.

Food & Diet:

  • European Green Lizards are primarily insectivorous.
  • Feed them a variety of gut-loaded insects, such as crickets and buffalo worms, making up approximately 60 percent of their diet.
  • The remaining 40 percent should consist of vegetables like collard greens, arugula, turnip greens, and dandelion.
  • Dust food with calcium supplements a few times a week for optimal health.

Possible Health Issues:

  • Be aware of "Tree bark tumor" or viral papillomata, especially in Eastern sub-species.
  • Practice good hygiene to prevent diseases.
  • Perform regular enclosure cleanings and maintain cleanliness.

Behaviour & Temperament:

  • European Green Lizards can be kept in outdoor vivaria and tolerate small colonies.
  • They can be somewhat social and may display territorial behaviour.
  • While not aggressive, males can show dominance; monitor for stress.
  • Handle with care, and wash hands before and after to prevent disease transmission.
