Ludwigia arcuata, otherwise known as needle leaf, is a practical favorite among aquarists. Although delicate in appearance, this plant is quite a hardy species that will grow either partially or fully submersed. With proper illumination and iron supplementation, the leaves will adopt deep red hues, making L. arcuata an especially lovely accent when situated among its more traditionally colored peers.

Carbon dioxide supplementation is not required to cultivate this species but will encourage robust, bushy growth that can then be cut at the nodes and re-planted in the substrate. Frequent pruning will promote branching, making L. arcuata well-suited to midground or background placement. Although you may want to conceal its lower stem portions using the low-growing varieties of your tank’s foreground, this plant’s upper regions are particularly kinetic and will blend gracefully into your tank’s environment.
