Description

Species Overview: The Ecuadorian/Pacific Island Hermit Crab, found across regions from California to Chile including Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Peru, is a fascinating crustacean species. These hermit crabs are commonly found in less densely wooded areas, under reefs, small rock caves, driftwood, and even in the sand. They display activity during the day in some moist vegetative areas and have a tendency to visit the sea to replenish salt.

Housing:

  • Enclosure: Provide a spacious glass or acrylic terrarium with both land and shallow water areas. A 10-gallon tank is suitable for a small group of hermit crabs. Ensure the tank has a secure lid to maintain humidity.

  • Substrate: Use a substrate of sand and coconut fiber to simulate their natural habitat. Maintain a depth of 3-5 inches to facilitate burrowing and moisture retention.

  • Hiding Spots: Offer various hiding spots such as rock caves, driftwood, and artificial shelters to provide security and encourage natural behaviors.

Temperature and Environment:

  • Temperature Range: Maintain temperatures between 77 - 89.6°F (20 - 32°C) in the terrarium. Use a heat pad or lamp to achieve the required temperature gradient.

  • Humidity Levels: Maintain high humidity levels of 70-80%. Use a spray bottle to mist the enclosure regularly to ensure a moist environment. Provide a shallow water dish for soaking and humidity.

Feeding:

  • Diet: Ecuadorian/Pacific Island Hermit Crabs are omnivores. Offer a varied diet including commercial hermit crab food, fresh vegetables, fruits, and occasional protein sources like dried shrimp or mealworms. Ensure access to calcium-rich foods for shell health.

Size and Lifespan:

  • Size: Juvenile hermit crabs measure between 0.4-0.8 inches (1-2 cm), while medium-sized ones range from 1.1-1.5 inches (3-4 cm). Larger individuals can reach 1.9-2.3 inches (5-6 cm).
  • Lifespan: On average, Ecuadorian/Pacific Island Hermit Crabs live between 3 to 12 years.

Maintenance and Cleanliness:

  • Spot Cleaning: Regularly remove uneaten food, exoskeleton molts, and clean the water dish to maintain cleanliness.
  • Full Cleaning: Perform a full terrarium cleaning every 4-6 weeks, including changing the substrate, disinfecting the enclosure, and cleaning water and food dishes.

Providing an optimal enclosure with a suitable environment, proper diet, and adequate humidity will ensure the well-being and longevity of your Ecuadorian/Pacific Island Hermit Crab. Observe their behavior and adjust care as needed to promote a healthy and thriving habitat.
