Description
Bull Snake (Red Hypo)
Scientific Name: Pituophis catenifer sayi
Common Name: Bull Snake
Species Overview
Size: Adult Bull Snakes typically reach 5–7 feet (1.5–2.1 m) in length; in rare cases, they may approach 8 feet (2.4 m). They are among the largest North American colubrids, featuring a muscular build and distinctive keeled scales that give them a slightly rough texture.
Appearance: The Red Hypo Bull Snake is a vivid and selectively bred morph that enhances the warm tones naturally present in the species. The Hypo (hypomelanistic) gene reduces dark pigmentation, allowing underlying red, orange, and tan hues to shine through. The “Red” line represents selective breeding for stronger and deeper red pigmentation, resulting in rich brick-red blotches on a soft golden or peach background. The combination of the hypo’s soft contrast and the line’s saturated tones creates a snake with a glowing, sunset-like appearance that becomes more intense with age.
Distribution: Found throughout central North America, ranging from the southern Canadian prairies through the central United States into northern Mexico.
Habitat: Bull Snakes inhabit grasslands, open woodlands, and agricultural areas, often found near rodent burrows or sandy soils suitable for digging. In captivity, they thrive in large terrestrial enclosures with deep substrate for burrowing and ample hiding areas.
Behaviour: Bull Snakes are confident, highly active constrictors that display impressive intelligence and awareness of their surroundings. They are known for their defensive hissing and bluffing when startled, but captive-bred individuals typically calm quickly and become curious, engaging animals that explore and interact readily.
Captive Care
Enclosure: Provide an adult enclosure measuring at least 4 feet × 2 feet × 2 feet, though larger is ideal. Use deep, soft substrate such as cypress mulch, soil-sand mix, or aspen to encourage burrowing. Include multiple hides, climbing branches, and a large water bowl for soaking.
Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a daytime gradient of 78–86°F (25–30°C) with a basking area near 90°F (32°C). Allow nighttime drops to 70–74°F (21–23°C). Keep humidity moderate, between 35–55%, and slightly increase during shedding cycles.
Diet: Offer thawed rodents proportionate to the snake’s size—juveniles every 5–7 days and adults every 10–14 days. Bull Snakes are robust feeders and respond well to consistent feeding schedules.
Behaviour in Captivity: Energetic, curious, and intelligent, Bull Snakes thrive on environmental enrichment and regular interaction. With consistent handling, they become calm, confident snakes suitable for experienced keepers seeking an active display species.
Special Considerations: Due to their strength and activity, Bull Snakes require secure, escape-proof enclosures. They are best suited for keepers comfortable with larger, alert colubrids.
Genetics Note
Hypo (Recessive): Reduces black pigmentation, resulting in softer, lighter tones and emphasizing reds, oranges, and yellows.
Red Line (Polygenic): A selectively bred line focusing on intensified red pigmentation. When combined with the Hypo gene, this produces exceptionally warm, saturated reds and pinkish undertones.
Genetic Combination Summary
The Bull Snake (Red Hypo) expresses one recessive and one polygenic trait:
-
Hypo (Recessive): Reduces melanin for a lighter, more pastel colour palette.
-
Red Line (Polygenic): Enhances and deepens red pigmentation for richer tone and saturation.
This morph blends the soft, pastel beauty of the Hypo gene with the fiery intensity of the Red line, resulting in a visually stunning and highly sought-after Bull Snake. Its balanced contrast and vibrant colours make it an ideal centrepiece for red and orange breeding projects.
