Description
Jeweled Lacerta (Melanistic)
Scientific Name: Timon lepidus
Common Name: Melanistic Jeweled Lacerta, Melanistic Ocellated Lizard
Species Overview
Size: Adults typically reach 24 to 30 inches (60 to 76 cm) in total length, with robust bodies and thick muscular tails.
Appearance: The Melanistic Jeweled Lacerta displays dramatically increased dark pigmentation, resulting in an overall charcoal, slate, or near-black appearance. The species’ characteristic ocelli (blue or green “jewel” spots) may appear muted, reduced, or transformed into darker tones, though some individuals retain faint hints of colour. Melanistic specimens often show a glossy sheen under strong lighting. Body proportions remain identical to the species: a large triangular head, sturdy limbs, pronounced scalation, and a long, semi-prehensile tail.
Distribution: Jeweled Lacertas occur naturally throughout the Iberian Peninsula, including Spain, Portugal, and parts of southern France.
Habitat: These lizards inhabit Mediterranean scrubland, rocky outcrops, woodland edges, and warm grasslands. They favour sun-exposed areas with ample hiding spots such as stone walls, burrows, and dense shrubs.
Behaviour: Jeweled Lacertas are diurnal, bold, and highly active. They are opportunistic hunters that consume insects, small vertebrates, eggs, fruits, and vegetation. Territorial behaviours include head-bobbing, lateral displays, tail thrashing, and rapid charges. They are strong climbers and fast-moving ground predators.
Captive Care
Enclosure: Provide a spacious terrestrial enclosure at least 48 inches × 24 inches × 24 inches (120 × 60 × 60 cm). Include stacked rocks, cork bark, branches, dense vegetation, and secure hides. Open floor space and stable vertical structures are equally important for this active species.
Temperature and Humidity:
Basking area: 110 to 120°F (43 to 49°C)
Warm side: 90 to 95°F (32 to 35°C)
Cool side: 75 to 82°F (24 to 28°C)
Night temperatures: 68 to 72°F (20 to 22°C)
Humidity should remain moderate, around 40 to 60 percent, with access to a humid hide for shedding.
Lighting: Provide strong full-spectrum lighting and high-output UVB (10 percent or desert-strength). These lizards thrive under intense light and benefit from wide, bright basking zones.
Diet: Offer a varied diet of roaches, crickets, black soldier fly larvae, snails, pinky mice (sparingly), fruits, flowers, berries, and chopped greens. Gut-load insects and supplement with calcium and multivitamins on a regular rotation.
Behaviour in Captivity: Jeweled Lacertas are intelligent, interactive, and often bold. They may learn to recognize feeding routines and explore their enclosure actively. While not always suited to frequent handling, many individuals become tolerant with slow, consistent conditioning.
Special Considerations:
• Provide multiple basking sites to support their high heat needs.
• Ensure hides and rock stacks are secure—these lizards dig and push with force.
• Melanistic individuals may absorb heat faster; monitor basking duration and temperature.
• Enrichment such as logs, tunnels, and visual barriers reduces stress and encourages natural behaviour.
Taxonomy Note
The Jeweled Lacerta belongs to the genus Timon, a group of large Mediterranean lizards known for strong jaws, striking colouration, and active, territorial behaviour. Timon lepidus is the largest species in the genus.
Genetics Note
Melanistic (recessive or line-bred): Increased melanin results in dramatically darkened coloration, often reducing or eliminating the typical blue and green ocelli. Expression varies by lineage, with some individuals appearing jet black and others presenting dark olive or charcoal tones.
Natural variation: Melanistic animals may still show faint ocelli or greenish undertones depending on environmental factors and genetic background.
