Description

Leopard Gecko (Electric Tangerine)

Scientific Name: Eublepharis macularius
Common Name: Leopard Gecko (Electric Tangerine)

Species Overview

Size: Adult Leopard Geckos usually reach 8–10 inches (20–25 cm). They are medium-sized, sturdy reptiles adapted to arid regions.

Appearance: The Electric Tangerine is a selectively bred line noted for its exceptionally bright and saturated orange pigmentation. Individuals often display intense orange along the body, sides, and tail, sometimes with deeper red tones around the head and dorsal region. Spotting is typically reduced or softened due to the concentration of colour, resulting in a clean, vivid appearance. The overall look is warm, glowing, and high-contrast, making the Electric Tangerine one of the most visually impressive tangerine lines in the hobby.

Distribution: Leopard Geckos originate from Pakistan, Afghanistan, northwestern India, and Iran.

Habitat: In the wild, they inhabit rocky deserts and scrublands, using burrows and crevices for shelter during the day. In captivity, they thrive in warm, semi-arid enclosures with secure hiding areas.

Behaviour: Leopard Geckos are nocturnal, calm, and curious. They tolerate gentle handling and adapt well to routine care. They display natural hunting and burrowing behaviours and are reliable, steady feeders.

Captive Care

Enclosure: Provide a terrestrial enclosure measuring at least 24 inches × 18 inches × 12 inches (60 × 45 × 30 cm). Include warm, cool, and humid hides. Use a naturalistic substrate such as sandy soil or a clay-based blend that supports digging.

Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a warm side of 88–92°F (31–33°C) and a cool side around 75–80°F (24–27°C). Night temperatures may drop to 70–74°F (21–23°C). Keep humidity near 30–40%, with a humid hide elevated to 60–70% for shedding support. Regulate heat with a thermostat.

Lighting: Low-level UVB (2–5%) supports metabolic and skeletal health. Provide a 12-hour day/night cycle.

Diet: Offer gut-loaded insects such as roaches, crickets, silkworms, and mealworms. Adults should be fed every other day; juveniles daily. Supplement prey with calcium and multivitamins. Fresh water should be available at all times.

Behaviour in Captivity: Leopard Geckos are hardy, predictable reptiles that thrive with consistent husbandry. Most live 15–20 years or more with proper care.

Special Considerations: Electric Tangerine is a line-bred trait, so expression varies between individuals. No unique care requirements are associated with this morph.

Taxonomy Note

The Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius) belongs to the family Eublepharidae. Extensive selective breeding has produced numerous colour lines, with Electric Tangerine being one of the most vibrant.

Genetics Note

This morph includes one trait:

  • Electric Tangerine (polygenic / line-bred) – Selectively bred for extremely bright, saturated orange pigmentation, often improving with age.

This trait affects appearance only and does not alter care requirements.
