Description

Leopard Gecko (Tremper Bold Stripe Jungle W&Y Mack Snow)

Scientific Name: Eublepharis macularius
Common Name: Leopard Gecko (Tremper Bold Stripe Jungle W&Y Mack Snow)

Species Overview

Size: Adult Leopard Geckos typically reach 8–10 inches (20–25 cm). They are medium-sized, sturdy reptiles that adapt well to warm, arid environments.

Appearance: This complex combination blends multiple pattern and colour traits with both recessive and co-dominant genetics. Mack Snow lightens the overall palette, producing cooler tones and reducing yellow when young. Tremper Albino removes black pigment entirely, replacing it with warm pastel yellows, creams, and pinkish hues. The W&Y (White & Yellow) gene enhances contrast and cleans up pattern edges while often intensifying colour saturation. The Bold Stripe influence creates strong, dark lateral striping, while the Jungle trait introduces irregular, broken, or swirling patterns across the dorsum and sides. Together, these traits produce a Leopard Gecko with a bright pastel base, cool Snow undertones, crisp pattern definition, and a dynamic, broken stripe arrangement that varies between individuals.

Distribution: Leopard Geckos originate from Pakistan, Afghanistan, northwestern India, and Iran.

Habitat: In nature, they inhabit rocky deserts and scrublands, hiding in burrows during the day. In captivity, they thrive in warm, semi-arid setups with secure hides and stable temperatures.

Behaviour: Leopard Geckos are nocturnal, calm, and adaptable. They tolerate gentle handling and display natural behaviours such as burrowing, nighttime exploring, and hunting insects.

Captive Care

Enclosure: Provide a terrestrial enclosure measuring at least 24 inches × 18 inches × 12 inches (60 × 45 × 30 cm). Include warm, cool, and humid hides. A sandy soil or clay-based naturalistic substrate supports natural digging behaviour.

Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a warm side of 88–92°F (31–33°C) and a cool side of 75–80°F (24–27°C). Nighttime temperatures may fall to 70–74°F (21–23°C). Keep humidity near 30–40%, with a humid hide at 60–70% to support shedding. Use a thermostat to regulate heating.

Lighting: Provide low-level UVB (2–5%) and a stable 12-hour day/night cycle. Tremper Albinos may be more light-sensitive, so ensure shaded areas are available.

Diet: Offer gut-loaded insects including roaches, crickets, silkworms, and mealworms. Adults eat every other day; juveniles daily. Dust prey with calcium and multivitamins. Provide fresh water at all times.

Behaviour in Captivity: Leopard Geckos are hardy and thrive with consistent care routines. They commonly live 15–20 years or more with proper husbandry.

Special Considerations: Pattern and colour expression vary widely due to the number of interacting traits. W&Y does not alter care requirements but may slightly brighten the animal’s appearance over time.

Taxonomy Note

The Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius) belongs to the family Eublepharidae. This morph combines multiple independently established traits, showcasing the diversity achievable through selective breeding.

Genetics Note

This morph includes:

  • Tremper Albino (recessive) – Removes black pigment and produces pastel tones.

  • Mack Snow (co-dominant / incomplete dominant) – Reduces warm pigmentation and produces cooler juvenile colours.

  • W&Y (White & Yellow) (dominant) – Enhances contrast, cleans pattern edges, and intensifies colour.

  • Bold Stripe (polygenic / line-bred) – Produces strong lateral striping.

  • Jungle (polygenic / line-bred) – Creates broken, irregular, or swirling dorsal patterns.

These traits influence appearance only and do not change standard Leopard Gecko husbandry requirements.
