Xenodon pulcher
The tricoulor hognose is a small colubrid snake from South America. They have been found in areas of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia. This snake's vibrant colours are the result of Batesian mimicry, as this snake has evolved to replicate the colours of the venomous coral snake as a basic defence mechanism.
As with the American western hognose this snake has a hardened scale on the front of its face, primarily used to burrow. They are very similar in temperament though they tend to sit and wait for prey rather than chasing it down.
