Description

Filopaludina martensi is a large, uncommon snail from Southeast Asia. Resembling mystery snails at a glance, these are actually in the same family as the more popular Piano Snails, Taia naticoides. These gentle giants reach almost 2" and are considered plant safe unless starved. In fact, they are not really an algae eating snail; they are detrivores that prefer to eat detritus and bacterial growth forming on the bottom of the tank. They will also take sinking fish foods quite readily. Interestingly, these snails can also supplement their diet via filter-ffeding; their gills trap minute organic particles as they breath, and transfer them to the mouth. This should not be relied on as their only source of food, though. Wizard snails breed easily, although their slow reproductive rate means you do not have to worry about them taking over a tank like some snails can. Snails are either male or female; after a short gestation period, females give birth to a single, fully-formed baby at a time.

These snails are currently around 1-2" in diameter.
