Description

Ball Python (Pastel Clown poss. Vanilla)

Python regius
Common Names: Ball Python, Royal Python

Species Overview

  • Size: Adults typically reach 3–5 feet (0.9–1.5 m), with females often being larger-bodied. Some may grow up to 6 feet.

  • Appearance:

    • Pastel (co-dominant): Brightens yellow/gold tones, reduces dark pigmentation, and sharpens overall contrast.

    • Clown (recessive): Clown produces bold dorsal striping, unique head stamps, and reduced side patterning.

  • Distribution: Wild-type ball pythons are native to West and Central Africa, where they inhabit savannahs, grasslands, and farmland edges.

  • Habitat: A terrestrial and burrow-dwelling species, often found in rodent burrows that provide shelter, humidity, and stable conditions.

  • Behaviour: A nocturnal ambush predator, feeding on small mammals and birds.

Captive Care

  • Enclosure: Adults thrive in a 40-gallon breeder (36” × 18” × 18”) or equivalent. Provide secure hides at both warm and cool ends, climbing décor, and a water bowl large enough for soaking.

  • Temperature & Humidity: Maintain daytime temps of 78–82°F (25–28°C) with a basking spot of 88–92°F (31–33°C). Nighttime temps may dip to 72–75°F (22–24°C). Keep humidity at 50–60%, with slight increases during shedding.

  • Diet: Juveniles should be offered hopper mice or rat pups every 5–7 days; adults typically eat medium rats every 10–14 days. Match prey to the snake’s girth.

  • Behaviour in Captivity: This morph displays the calm and manageable temperament common to ball pythons, making it suitable for keepers of all levels.

  • Special Considerations: While genetics influence appearance and breeding potential, husbandry requirements remain consistent across all ball python morphs.

Genetics Note

  • Pastel (Co-Dominant): Brightens yellow/gold hues and enhances contrast; two copies form the Super Pastel.

  • Clown (Recessive): Produces bold dorsal striping and reduced side patterning.
