Description
Poecilocharax weitzmani is an unusual species of tetra that is widespread in northern South America. Unlike most tetras, these are not a schooling fish, instead forming loose aggregations, with males sparring for female attention. They don't even closely resemble other tetras, almost resembling a killifish or Pseudomugil rainbowfish. Males develop very large dorsal and anal fins that are extended when they spar. Both sexes have a broad black bar across the side, which develops iridescent blue speckles with maturity. Males get strong red to orange colour across the back, belly, and fins. These are a fairly shy species that prefers blackwater conditions, ergo tankmates with similar dispositions and water requirements are the best choices. Some good contenders include small gouramis, pencilfish, and other small peaceful tetras.
These specimens are currently around 0.75-1" long and just starting to develop adult colour. They are in a 50/50 mix of tap and reverse osmosis water, with a hardness of around 4 degrees gH.
