Description
Steatocranus casaurius is an interesting species of West African river cichlid. With reduced swim bladders, these fish 'hop' around, more like a goby than a typical cichlid. This makes them look pretty comical, especially with their very large nuchal hump relative to their size. While males may reach up to 5", 3-4" is more typical for these dwarf cichlids, with females staying smaller. Buffalo heads are monogamous and mate for life; they do not usually tolerate other cichlids, but generally ignore schooling fish. They like to dig, so make sure there are no heavy, unsecured rocks they could dig under and get crushed by!
These are young adults, with the males currently about 1.75-2" long, and the females lightly smaller.
