Description
Uromastyx is a popular genus of Agamid lizards native to arid areas of Africa and the Middle East. Sometimes known as 'Spiny-Tailed Lizards', these herbivores have a heavily spiked tail they use to defend themselves. Uromastyx like it quite hot, and need a fairly sizeable tank to give the room for a hot basking area, and a cool side to retreat to when the need to cool down. As herbivores, they relish leafy greens and other vegetable matter; they do not need, and should not be fed, insects.
Ornate Uromastyx, Uromastyx ornata, are one of the more colourful species in the genus. Adults develop yellow, blue, and green colour on their backs, with males being the more colourful sex. These are locally-bred babies around 4" long, including the tail.
