Description
California Kingsnake (Aberrant)
Scientific Name: Lampropeltis getula californiae
Common Name: California Kingsnake
Species Overview
Size: Adults typically reach 3–4 feet (0.9–1.2 m) in length, though some large females may exceed 5 feet (1.5 m). They have a lean, muscular body with smooth, glossy scales and a defined head.
Appearance: The Aberrant California Kingsnake is a distinctive morph characterized by irregular, offset, or broken banding. Instead of the even, alternating black-and-white bands typical of the species, this morph shows disrupted or connected patches, often forming partial stripes, waves, or fragmented loops along the body. Colouration remains bold—jet black contrasted with white, cream, or pale yellow—but the inconsistent pattern gives each individual a unique appearance. No two Aberrant Kingsnakes look exactly alike, making this form a favourite among enthusiasts who appreciate visual individuality.
Distribution: Originates from selective captive breeding of the California Kingsnake, which is naturally found across the western United States and northern Mexico.
Habitat: California Kingsnakes inhabit deserts, grasslands, forests, and scrublands across the southwestern United States. In captivity, this morph thrives in naturalistic terrariums with soft substrate, climbing branches, and secure hiding areas.
Behaviour: California Kingsnakes are active, curious, and hardy. They are alert during the day and responsive to handling once accustomed to their environment. Young individuals may display defensive behaviour but typically calm quickly with regular care and positive interaction.
Captive Care
Enclosure: A 3-foot × 18-inch × 18-inch enclosure is suitable for adults. Provide multiple hides, climbing branches, and a large water bowl. Natural substrate such as soil, coconut fibre, or aspen helps regulate humidity and supports natural burrowing.
Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a daytime gradient of 78–86°F (26–30°C) with a basking area near 90°F (32°C). Allow nighttime drops to 70–74°F (21–23°C). Keep humidity between 40–55%, with a humid hide to support shedding.
Diet: Offer frozen-thawed rodents every 7–10 days for juveniles and every 10–14 days for adults. They are strong feeders with reliable feeding responses.
Behaviour in Captivity: California Kingsnakes are engaging, interactive, and easy to manage. They tolerate regular handling and make excellent display snakes due to their bold contrast and adaptability.
Special Considerations: As with all kingsnakes, individuals should be housed separately, as they may prey on other snakes.
Genetics Note
Aberrant (Polygenic Selective Trait): Alters the traditional banded pattern by introducing irregular breaks, partial connections, or distorted shapes along the body. The degree of aberrancy varies between individuals and has been selectively refined through multi-generational breeding. This trait is visual and polygenic rather than tied to a single gene.
Genetic Combination Summary
The California Kingsnake (Aberrant) expresses one polygenic trait:
-
Aberrant: Creates irregular, offset, or broken banding, producing a unique and unpredictable pattern in each individual.
This morph highlights the species’ natural contrast while adding dynamic visual variety. Highly regarded among keepers for its individuality and sharp pattern definition, the Aberrant California Kingsnake is a valued and visually distinctive form of this classic North American species.
