Description

Colombian Rainbow Boa (CRB)

Epicrates maurus
Morph: Leucistic

Species Overview

  • Size: Colombian rainbow boas are generally 4–6 feet (1.2–1.8 m) as adults, with females reaching the larger end of the range. They are more slender compared to Brazilian rainbow boas.

  • Appearance: The Leucistic Colombian Rainbow Boa lacks normal pigmentation, resulting in a solid white or pale cream body with little to no visible pattern. Unlike albino boas, leucistic individuals typically retain normal dark eyes. Their iridescent scales remain, producing a striking “pearl-like” sheen under light.

  • Distribution: Native to northern South America, primarily Colombia and surrounding areas.

  • Habitat: Wild Colombian rainbow boas occur in humid forests, savannahs, and riparian zones, where they take advantage of dense cover and seasonal rains.

  • Behaviour: Nocturnal ambush predators that feed on small mammals, birds, and reptiles. Juveniles may climb more frequently, while adults are primarily terrestrial.

Captive Care

  • Enclosure: Adults thrive in 4′ × 2′ × 2′ enclosures, with secure hides, cork bark, climbing branches, and foliage. Bioactive or naturalistic setups help regulate humidity and provide enrichment.

  • Temperature & Humidity: Maintain an ambient gradient of 78–82°F (25–28°C), with a basking area of 86–88°F (30–31°C). Nighttime drops to 74–76°F (23–24°C) are acceptable. Humidity should remain 70–85%, with frequent misting and a large water bowl to ensure proper hydration and shedding.

  • Diet: Juveniles feed every 7–10 days on small rodents; adults every 14–21 days. Meals should be proportioned to avoid obesity.

  • Behaviour in Captivity: Colombian rainbow boas are hardy once established, though juveniles can be defensive at first. With consistent care, they typically settle into manageable snakes.

  • Special Considerations: Leucistic individuals have the same husbandry needs as normal Colombian rainbow boas, though their light coloration can make them more prone to visible scarring if injured.

Genetics Note

The Leucistic Colombian Rainbow Boa involves:

  • Leucism (recessive, expressed): A homozygous recessive trait resulting in the absence of normal pigment, creating a nearly patternless, solid white or cream boa with normal dark eyes.

  • Distinction from Albino: Unlike Albino boas, leucistic boas lack melanin but do not display the yellows/oranges characteristic of albinism. They also retain normal eye coloration.
