Description
Corn Snake (Aztec Coral Ghost)
Scientific Name: Pantherophis guttatus
Common Name: Corn Snake
Species Overview
Size: Adults typically reach 3–5 feet (0.9–1.5 m) in length, with a slender, well-proportioned body and smooth, glossy scales.
Appearance: The Aztec Coral Ghost is a highly refined and visually intricate Corn Snake morph that combines multiple color and pattern genes to create a stunning pastel mosaic. This morph features a soft, pinkish-silver base overlaid with intricate, broken patterning and muted peach or coral undertones. The Aztec pattern gene produces chaotic, fragmented blotches, while the Coral Ghost combination blends warm pinks, grays, and creams through the interaction of Anerythristic, Hypomelanistic, and Strawberry genes. The result is a beautifully complex morph with a diffused pattern and a silvery blush that deepens slightly with age. The belly is pale with reduced checkering, complementing the morph’s clean, delicate aesthetic.
Distribution: A captive-bred designer morph of the Corn Snake (P. guttatus), a species native to the southeastern United States.
Habitat: In the wild, Corn Snakes inhabit pine forests, grasslands, and farmlands. In captivity, they thrive in naturalistic terrariums that provide climbing space, ground cover, and multiple hiding areas.
Behaviour: Calm, intelligent, and curious. Corn Snakes are crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk. The Aztec Coral Ghost retains the species’ gentle temperament and steady feeding habits, making it a striking and manageable display morph for any keeper.
Captive Care
Enclosure: Adults thrive in a naturalistic 40-gallon terrarium (36” × 18” × 18”) or larger. A bioactive or soil-based substrate with leaf litter allows for burrowing and exploration. Include cork bark, climbing branches, and foliage for environmental complexity.
Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a daytime gradient of 75–82°F (24–28°C) with a basking area of 86–88°F (30–31°C). Nighttime temperatures can safely drop to 70°F (21°C). Humidity should remain between 40–60%, with a humid hide provided during shedding cycles.
Diet: Offer frozen-thawed rodents every 7–10 days for juveniles and every 10–14 days for adults. Prey should be approximately 1.25× the width of the snake’s mid-body.
Behaviour in Captivity: Gentle, confident, and adaptable. This morph handles well and thrives on environmental enrichment, showing curious behavior when exploring its habitat.
Special Considerations: Corn Snakes are adept climbers and escape artists—secure enclosures are essential. Naturalistic environments not only promote activity but also enhance the subtle coloration and sheen of this morph.
Genetics Note
Anerythristic (Recessive)
Removes red and orange pigmentation, creating a grayscale base of black, gray, and white. This forms the visual foundation for the Ghost and Coral Ghost combinations.
Hypomelanistic (Recessive)
Reduces black pigmentation, softening contrast and creating warmer, more translucent tones. In combination with Anerythristic, it yields the “Ghost” morph—muted gray and tan coloration with a pastel overlay.
Strawberry (Recessive)
Adds soft pinkish or peach hues when combined with other morphs. When layered with Anerythristic and Hypomelanistic, it produces the Coral Ghost variation—characterized by silvery blush tones and a delicate, coral-pink tint.
Aztec (Dominant Pattern Mutation)
A dominant or incomplete dominant pattern gene that produces broken, chaotic blotches and irregular striping. It disrupts the traditional Corn Snake pattern into an intricate mosaic that enhances visual depth and uniqueness.
Genetic Combination Summary
The Aztec Coral Ghost combines three recessive color traits and one dominant pattern trait:
-
Anerythristic = Removes red/orange pigment, producing grayscale tones
-
Hypomelanistic = Reduces black pigment, creating soft pastel contrast
-
Strawberry = Adds coral-pink hues and blush undertones
-
Aztec = Creates a fragmented, chaotic pattern that breaks up traditional blotches
Together, these genes produce a soft, silvery-pink Corn Snake with a broken mosaic pattern and a uniquely warm, ethereal tone. The Aztec Coral Ghost is a fine example of modern selective breeding—delicate in coloration yet bold in pattern.
