Description

Corn Snake (Normal het. Palmetto 50% het. Amel Anery)

Scientific Name: Pantherophis guttatus
Common Name: Corn Snake

Species Overview

Size: Adults typically reach 3–5 feet (0.9–1.5 m) in length, with a lean, muscular body and smooth, glossy scales.

Appearance: The het. Palmetto 50% het. Amel Anery  Corn Snake is a genetically diverse individual that may appear visually similar to a normal or slightly color-shifted Corn Snake, yet it carries an exceptional combination of recessive traits. This Corn Snake typically displays warm orange, tan, or red tones with clearly defined saddle markings. The Palmetto gene, though not expressed, often produces slightly brighter or cleaner tones even in carriers. The possible Amelanistic, and Anerythristic hets add significant potential for producing a variety of visual outcomes—including albino or greyscale  offspring—when bred to compatible partners. This combination represents an impressive genetic toolkit, uniting some of the most desirable morph lines in the species.

Distribution: A captive-bred genetic combination of the Corn Snake (P. guttatus), developed through pairing high-value Palmetto carriers with multi-het lines for future designer breeding projects.

Habitat: Wild Corn Snakes inhabit forest edges, meadows, and agricultural areas across the southeastern United States. In captivity, they thrive in naturalistic terrariums that provide hiding opportunities, climbing branches, and natural substrate for burrowing.

Behaviour: Calm, observant, and intelligent. Corn Snakes are crepuscular, most active during dawn and dusk. The het. Palmetto 50% het. Scaleless Amel Anery Strawberry Corn Snake retains the species’ dependable temperament, making it both a rewarding pet and a valuable breeding prospect.

Captive Care

Enclosure: A naturalistic 40-gallon terrarium (36” × 18” × 18”) or larger is ideal for adults. Use a soil-based or bioactive substrate layered with leaf litter to encourage burrowing and natural movement. Provide multiple hides, cork flats, climbing branches, and plant cover to support exploration and security.

Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a daytime gradient of 75–82°F (24–28°C) with a basking area around 86–88°F (30–31°C). Allow nighttime drops to 70°F (21°C). Maintain humidity between 40–60%, with a humid hide provided during shedding.

Diet: Offer frozen-thawed rodents every 7–10 days for juveniles and every 10–14 days for adults. Prey should be approximately 1.25× the width of the snake’s mid-body.

Behaviour in Captivity: Calm, steady, and easy to handle. Corn Snakes adapt well to consistent care and naturalistic habitats. The het. Palmetto 50% het. Scaleless Amel Anery Strawberry Corn Snake may not display visible morph traits, but its genetic value makes it a cornerstone breeder for multi-gene projects.

Special Considerations: Because several genes are carried recessively and some only possibly, genetic testing or selective breeding may be required to confirm visual outcomes in offspring.

Genetics Note

het. Palmetto (Recessive Carrier)

Carries one copy of the Palmetto gene, which produces an all-white snake with random colored flecking when expressed.

50% het. Amel (Amelanistic – Recessive Possibility)

May carry one copy of the Amelanistic gene, which removes black and brown pigment, resulting in bright red or orange coloration when visual.

50% het. Anery (Anerythristic – Recessive Possibility)

May carry one copy of the Anerythristic gene, which removes red pigment, creating silver, gray, and black tones when expressed.

Genetic Combination Summary

The het. Palmetto 50% het. Amel Anery Corn Snake carries one confirmed and multiple possible recessive traits:

  • het. Palmetto = Carrier for the white-bodied, speckled Palmetto morph

  • 50% het. Amel (Amelanistic) = Possible carrier for pigment-removal mutation

  • 50% het. Anery (Anerythristic) = Possible carrier for red pigment reduction

Together, these genes form a powerful and flexible genetic base, offering the potential to produce morphs such as Palmetto, Snow Palmetto, or Ghost Palmetto. The het. Palmetto 50% het. Amel Anery Corn Snake exemplifies the future of multi-gene Corn Snake breeding—genetically rich, visually clean, and full of possibility.
