Description

Corn Snake (Peppermint)

Scientific Name: Pantherophis guttatus
Common Name: Corn Snake

Species Overview

Size: Adults typically reach 3–5 feet (0.9–1.5 m) in length, with a slender, muscular frame and smooth, glossy scales.

Appearance: The Peppermint Corn Snake is a cool-toned morph created by combining the Amelanistic (Albino) and Diffused (Bloodred) recessive traits. This Corn Snake displays a soft pink to creamy white coloration with pale gray or rose-tinted markings that fade as it matures. The Amelanistic gene removes dark pigment, while the Diffused gene smooths the pattern and eliminates belly checkering, resulting in a uniform, frosted appearance. The eyes are ruby red, typical of amelanistic snakes, which adds to the morph’s distinct, pastel-like aesthetic. The overall effect is an elegant and muted snake with a delicate, almost translucent look.

Distribution: A selectively bred morph of the Corn Snake (P. guttatus), developed through the combination of the Amelanistic and Diffused (Bloodred) recessive genes.

Habitat: Wild Corn Snakes inhabit forests, fields, and agricultural zones throughout the southeastern United States. In captivity, they thrive in naturalistic terrariums that provide climbing structures, hiding areas, and a soft substrate for burrowing.

Behaviour: Corn Snakes are crepuscular, most active around dawn and dusk. They are hardy, adaptable, and consistent feeders, making them a reliable species for both display and breeding projects.

Captive Care

Enclosure: A naturalistic 40-gallon terrarium (36” × 18” × 18”) or larger is ideal for adults. A soil-based or bioactive substrate layered with leaf litter supports natural burrowing behavior. Provide multiple hides, cork flats, climbing branches, and plant cover for enrichment and security.

Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a daytime gradient of 75–82°F (24–28°C) with a basking area around 86–88°F (30–31°C). Allow nighttime drops to 70°F (21°C). Maintain humidity between 40–60%, offering a humid hide during shedding.

Diet: Offer frozen-thawed rodents every 7–10 days for juveniles and every 10–14 days for adults. Prey should be roughly 1.25× the width of the snake’s mid-body.

Behaviour in Captivity: Corn Snakes are active and inquisitive, responding well to naturalistic setups and consistent routines. They thrive when provided with space to explore, climb, and burrow.

Special Considerations: The Peppermint Corn Snake’s pale base color makes it an ideal candidate for combining with other color-modifying morphs such as Hypomelanistic or Lavender to create lighter or cooler-toned variations.

Genetics Note

Amelanistic (Recessive)

Removes all dark pigment, resulting in red, orange, and white coloration with ruby-red eyes.

Diffused / Bloodred (Recessive)

Removes belly checkering and reduces or eliminates dorsal patterning, resulting in smooth, even coloration.

Genetic Combination Summary

The Peppermint Corn Snake expresses two recessive traits:

  • Amelanistic = Removes black pigment, creating red and white coloration

  • Diffused (Bloodred) = Reduces dorsal and ventral patterning for a smoother look

Together, these genes create a clean, frosted appearance with soft pink and white tones. The Peppermint Corn Snakeserves as an excellent foundation for producing visually subtle morphs, including variations like Peppermint Motley or Hypo Peppermint, which emphasize its pale, refined coloration.
