Description

Corn Snake (Scaleless Extreme Reverse Okeetee)

Scientific Name: Pantherophis guttatus
Common Name: Corn Snake

Species Overview

Size: Adults typically reach 3–5 feet (0.9–1.5 m) in length, with a strong, agile body and an exceptionally smooth, scale-free surface.

Appearance: The Scaleless Extreme Reverse Okeetee Corn Snake is one of the most visually striking and high-contrast morphs within the species. This Corn Snake showcases intense red to bright orange saddles framed by bold, thick white borders set against a brilliant yellow to tangerine background. The Extreme Reverse Okeetee line represents the pinnacle of selective breeding from Amelanistic (Albino) Okeetees, focusing on maximizing border width and color saturation. The addition of the Scaleless gene elevates this effect dramatically—amplifying brightness, depth, and clarity while giving the pattern a sleek, reflective quality. Each individual exhibits the fiery palette of a Reverse Okeetee but with even crisper contrast and a glassy sheen that enhances every edge and tone.

Distribution: A selectively bred morph of the Corn Snake (P. guttatus), developed through the combination of the Amelanistic and Scaleless recessive traits with the polygenic Extreme Okeetee lineage.

Habitat: Wild Corn Snakes are native to forests, grasslands, and farmlands across the southeastern United States. In captivity, they thrive in naturalistic terrariums featuring soft substrate, secure hides, and smooth climbing branches to accommodate their scale-free skin.

Behaviour: Corn Snakes are crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk. They are hardy, adaptable, and reliable feeders that perform well in both naturalistic display enclosures and structured breeding collections.

Captive Care

Enclosure: A naturalistic 40-gallon terrarium (36” × 18” × 18”) or larger is ideal for adults. Use a soft, non-abrasive substrate such as soil, coconut fiber, or sphagnum blends, and include rounded décor like cork flats, smooth branches, and plant cover for enrichment and security. Avoid rough materials that may irritate the skin.

Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a daytime gradient of 75–82°F (24–28°C) with a basking area around 86–88°F (30–31°C). Allow nighttime drops to 70°F (21°C). Keep humidity between 50–65%, with a humid hide provided to support shedding and skin hydration.

Diet: Offer frozen-thawed rodents every 7–10 days for juveniles and every 10–14 days for adults. Prey should be roughly 1.25× the width of the snake’s mid-body.

Behaviour in Captivity: Corn Snakes are consistent and adaptable in captivity. Scaleless individuals benefit from slightly higher humidity and softer furnishings, ensuring smooth skin health and complete sheds.

Special Considerations: The Scaleless Extreme Reverse Okeetee is considered a “showpiece” morph, often used in breeding to produce ultra-high-contrast lines and visually enhanced combinations. Pairing with traits such as Hypo or Coral can yield offspring with even richer reds and softer white borders, extending the already exceptional coloration of this morph.

Genetics Note

Scaleless (Recessive)

Removes external scales, producing a smooth, reflective surface that amplifies color saturation and contrast.

Amelanistic (Recessive)

Removes black pigment, resulting in vivid orange, red, and yellow coloration with red eyes.

Extreme Okeetee Line (Selective Line Trait)

A selectively bred enhancement of the Okeetee lineage focused on thicker, cleaner white saddle borders and deeper color saturation. This is a polygenic trait refined over generations.

Genetic Combination Summary

The Scaleless Extreme Reverse Okeetee Corn Snake expresses two recessive and one polygenic trait:

  • Scaleless = Removes scales, creating a glossy, reflective surface that enhances color intensity

  • Amelanistic = Removes black pigment, producing vivid orange, red, and yellow hues

  • Extreme Okeetee Line = Selectively bred for maximum color contrast and bold, thick white borders

Together, these genetics create a radiant, fiery Corn Snake with intense contrast and unparalleled clarity. The Scaleless Extreme Reverse Okeetee Corn Snake represents the peak of selective refinement within the Scaleless group—an extraordinary example of how careful genetic pairing can elevate natural beauty into a living work of art.
