Description
Crenuchus spilurus is an interesting 'tetra', coming from its own family of Crenuchidae, separate from the true tetras of Characidae. Unlike the vast majority of Characins, sailfin tetras are cave spawners and have strong parental care, with males fiercely guarding their eggs. While their body colour is not anything crazy, males have large orange and black fins, hence their common name. Despite a somewhat fearsom, 'bulldog'-like appearance, these are a timid tetra that mix best with calm, smaller fish, such as certain pencfilfish and rasboras.
These are adults, ranging from around 1.25-2" long.
