Description
Dendrobates tinctorius "Matecho" hail from French Guiana and were brought to the USA from European imports. These frogs can only be housed in groups as juveniles to sub adults, and even then it becomes risky as they near adulthood.
They can tolerate a temperature range of 65 F to 80 F, but prefer temperatures in the low to mid 70s. Temperatures over 85F are dangerous.
Like most poison dart frogs, Matecho prefer a humidity range of 70 – 100%, but can tolerate humidity down to 50% for short periods of time if the frogs have access to water. Low humidity levels, especially without access to water, can quickly be fatal.
Adult female Matecho are larger, measuring in at approximately 2.25 inches. Male Matecho are a bit smaller, averaging about 2 inches at maturity. Some froggers believe this is the largest morph of tinctorius in the NA hobby.
