Species Overview
Size: Adults typically reach 3–4.5 feet (0.9–1.4 m) in length, with a robust, muscular build and smooth, glossy scales.
Appearance: The Normal Desert Kingsnake is an elegant, naturally patterned kingsnake featuring a glossy black body densely speckled with yellow or gold scales. The result is a shimmering, checkerboard-like pattern that can vary from heavy gold flecking to lighter, scattered spotting depending on locality. The head is typically jet-black with faint yellow specks, and the belly is pale cream with irregular black blotches. The sheen of the scales gives the snake a reflective, almost metallic quality in strong light. Its natural contrast and subtle patterning make it one of the most visually refined of all kingsnake species.
Distribution: Native to the southern United States, primarily found throughout Texas, New Mexico, and northern Mexico.
Habitat: Desert Kingsnakes inhabit arid grasslands, scrublands, and agricultural regions across the southwestern United States. In captivity, this species thrives in naturalistic terrariums with soft substrate, climbing branches, and secure hiding areas.
Behaviour: Calm, intelligent, and adaptable, Desert Kingsnakes are known for their even temperament and consistent feeding response. They are alert yet tolerant of handling, making them one of the most manageable kingsnake species in captivity.
Captive Care
Enclosure: A 3-foot × 18-inch × 18-inch enclosure is suitable for adults. Provide multiple hides, smooth décor, and climbing opportunities. A naturalistic substrate such as soil, coconut fibre, or aspen helps regulate humidity and supports burrowing behaviour.
Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a daytime gradient of 78–86°F (26–30°C) with a basking area near 90°F (32°C). Allow nighttime drops to 70–74°F (21–23°C). Maintain humidity between 35–55%, with a humid hide provided during shedding.
Diet: Offer frozen-thawed rodents every 7–10 days for juveniles and every 10–14 days for adults. Desert Kingsnakes are reliable feeders that thrive on a consistent schedule.
Behaviour in Captivity: These snakes are hardy, calm, and easy to handle. They adapt well to consistent care and are ideal for both beginner and experienced keepers.
Special Considerations: Kingsnakes should always be housed individually to prevent cannibalism. Desert Kingsnakes are highly adaptable and tolerant of a range of environmental conditions, making them one of the easiest kingsnake species to maintain successfully.
Genetics Note
The Normal Desert Kingsnake represents the wild-type form of the species and serves as the foundation for several selectively bred morphs. Known genetic variations include Albino (recessive), which produces bright yellow and white coloration with red eyes, and Axanthic (recessive), which removes yellow pigment to reveal shades of black, grey, and silver. Combination morphs such as Snow (Albino + Axanthic) are also recognized in captivity. Naturally occurring regional variation within wild populations produces differences in brightness, spotting density, and the ratio of gold to black scales—features often selectively enhanced through breeding projects.
