The Aimara, also known as the Giant Wolf Fish, is the largest species of wolf fish and a striking predator in the aquarium hobby. Renowned for its ferocity, this fish is suitable only for very large aquariums or ideally, indoor ponds. It inhabits the Amazon and Orinoco Basins, where it preys on other fish using its sharp, prominent teeth. Despite their heavyset look, Aimara Wolf Fish are swift swimmers and need plenty of swimming space along with a robust, tightly fitted cover to prevent escape. They are resilient and adapt well to aquarium life if water quality is maintained. Due to their large size and aggressive nature, they are best suited for experienced hobbyists who can provide the necessary care and space.
Native to Venezuela's Orinoco Basin near Puerto Carreno, these piscivores consume almost any smaller fish and can be transitioned to eat frozen fish and shrimp in captivity. They can grow up to 30 inches, with exceptional specimens reaching nearly 4 feet. A minimum tank size of 300 gallons is required, though a custom indoor pond is preferable for adults. Their extreme aggressiveness means they will likely harm or kill any tankmates, so they should be housed alone.
