Description
Nannostomus eques is a strange species of pencilfish. Named for the hockey stick-like dark bar on their flanks, they almost always swim at an angle of about 45 degrees or more, head pointed toward the surface. These shy schoolers aren't the best choice for a busy community, but pair well with other small timid fishes such as Boraras sp, Betta sp, small tetras, etc. They also make the perfect dither fish for Apistogramma dwarf cichlids; the presence of schooling fish makes apistos more comfortable, and pencils usually will not predate on the apisto's fry.
