Description

Western Hognose (Albino Arctic)

Scientific Name: Heterodon nasicus
Common Name: Western Hognose Snake

Species Overview

Size: Adult females typically reach 2–3 feet (0.6–0.9 m) in length, while males remain smaller, averaging 1.5–2 feet (0.45–0.6 m). Both sexes share the species’ distinctive upturned snout used for burrowing and digging through sandy terrain.

Appearance: The Albino Arctic Western Hognose combines two highly complementary traits that create one of the cleanest and most visually refined morphs of the species. The Albino gene removes all dark pigmentation, replacing it with soft yellow, orange, and cream tones, while the Arctic gene enhances pattern clarity, softens contrast, and increases the brightness of lighter scales. Together, these traits produce a smooth, pastel-like snake with subtle but sharp saddle definition and a warm golden sheen under light. The red eyes, characteristic of the Albino gene, stand out against the muted colour palette, giving the morph an elegant, high-contrast look.

Distribution: Native to central North America, ranging from southern Canada through the central United States and into northern Mexico.

Habitat: Western Hognose Snakes inhabit grasslands, prairies, and semi-arid scrublands with sandy or loose soil ideal for burrowing. In captivity, this morph thrives in terrestrial terrariums with soft substrate, climbing décor, and secure hiding areas.

Behaviour: These snakes are diurnal and known for their curious, bold personalities. When threatened, they may flatten their necks, hiss, or play dead, but they are harmless and calm once handled regularly.

Captive Care

Enclosure: Provide an enclosure at least 3 feet × 18 inches × 18 inches for adults. Use soft, loose substrate such as aspen or a sand-soil blend for burrowing. Include multiple hides, smooth décor, and low branches for enrichment.

Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a daytime gradient of 78–86°F (25–30°C) with a basking area around 90°F (32°C). Allow nighttime drops to 70–74°F (21–23°C). Maintain humidity between 30–50%, increasing slightly during shedding.

Diet: Offer thawed rodents sized to approximately 1.25× the width of the snake’s mid-body. Feed juveniles every 4–5 days and adults every 7–10 days. Western Hognoses are reliable feeders with strong feeding responses.

Behaviour in Captivity: Western Hognoses are hardy and inquisitive snakes that adapt quickly to consistent handling and stable conditions. They often exhibit interactive, exploratory behaviour and make excellent display animals.

Special Considerations: Western Hognoses are mildly rear-fanged, and their venom poses minimal risk to humans unless an allergic reaction occurs. They should always be handled calmly and housed individually to prevent stress or food-related aggression.

Genetics Note

Albino (Recessive): Removes black pigmentation, producing bright yellow, orange, and cream tones with red eyes. This gene enhances the overall brightness and eliminates dark contrast.

Arctic (Incomplete Dominant): Increases contrast between pattern elements, sharpens saddles, and enhances the brightness of lighter scales. Super Arctic forms (homozygous Arctic) display extreme pattern reduction and strong monochromatic contrast.

Genetic Combination Summary

The Western Hognose (Albino Arctic) expresses two visual genetic traits:

  • Albino (Recessive): Removes dark pigment, creating vivid warm tones and red eyes.

  • Arctic (Incomplete Dominant): Brightens and refines the pattern, enhancing contrast and smoothness of colour transitions.

This pairing produces a soft, golden morph with exceptional clarity and a refined, pastel-like appearance. The Albino Arctic Western Hognose is highly valued by breeders for its clean, elegant look and potential in producing visually striking Arctic-based combinations such as Snow Arctic or Toffee Arctic.
