Description

Honduran Milksnake (Ghost het. Albino)

Scientific Name: Lampropeltis triangulum hondurensis
Common Name: Honduran Milksnake

Species Overview

Size: Adults typically reach 4–6 feet (1.2–1.8 m) in length, with a thick, muscular body and smooth, glossy scales.

Appearance: The Ghost het. Albino Honduran Milksnake combines cool, smoky hues with the potential for bright, pastel offspring. The Ghost morph—formed by the combination of Anerythristic and Hypomelanistic genes—removes both red and much of the black pigment, leaving subtle shades of grey, beige, and cream. The result is a soft, misty appearance with gently contrasting bands and a semi-translucent glow under natural light. The hidden Albino gene carried by this individual adds further breeding potential, as pairing with compatible partners can yield Snow or Pearloffspring. This morph is both visually refined and genetically versatile, valued for its understated elegance and potential to produce a wide range of pale, luminous colour combinations.

Distribution: Originates from selective captive breeding of the Honduran Milksnake, a subspecies native to Honduras, Nicaragua, and northern Costa Rica.

Habitat: Honduran Milksnakes inhabit tropical forests, grasslands, and agricultural regions across Central America. In captivity, this morph thrives in naturalistic terrariums with soft substrate, climbing branches, and secure hiding areas.

Behaviour: These snakes are confident, alert, and easy to maintain. Juveniles may show mild defensiveness but quickly become calm with routine handling. Adults are docile and make excellent display or breeding animals.

Captive Care

Enclosure: Provide an enclosure at least 4 feet × 2 feet × 2 feet for adults. Include multiple hides, climbing décor, and smooth furnishings. A naturalistic substrate such as soil, coconut fibre, or aspen allows burrowing and helps regulate humidity.

Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a daytime gradient of 78–86°F (26–30°C) with a basking area near 90°F (32°C). Allow nighttime drops to 70–74°F (21–23°C). Maintain humidity between 50–70%, providing a humid hide during shedding.

Diet: Offer frozen-thawed rodents every 7–10 days for juveniles and every 10–14 days for adults. Honduran Milksnakes are dependable feeders and rarely refuse meals.

Behaviour in Captivity: Calm, curious, and robust, these snakes are excellent captives. Their subdued coloration and strong genetic potential make them both visually appealing and valuable for breeding projects.

Special Considerations: Milksnakes should always be housed individually, as they may consume other snakes.

Genetics Note

Anery (Recessive): Removes red pigmentation, producing grey, white, and black tones with cool, desaturated contrast.

Hypo (Recessive): Reduces black pigmentation, brightening the remaining colours and softening contrast.

Ghost (Anery + Hypo Double Recessive): Combines the effects of both Anery and Hypo, resulting in soft grey and cream banding with minimal black and red pigmentation.

het. Albino (Recessive Carrier): Carries one copy of the Albino gene, which removes black pigment when visual. (“het” is short for heterozygous, meaning one copy of the gene is carried but not expressed.)

Genetic Combination Summary

The Honduran Milksnake (Ghost het. Albino) expresses two recessive traits and carries one additional:

  • Anery (Recessive): Removes red pigmentation, creating cool, neutral tones.

  • Hypo (Recessive): Reduces black pigment for a soft, pale finish.

  • het. Albino (Recessive Carrier): Adds potential for producing white or pastel offspring when paired with compatible partners.

Together, these genes produce a smooth, ethereal colour palette with soft contrast and subtle banding. The Ghost het. Albino Honduran Milksnake is highly regarded for both its visual appeal and strong breeding potential—an ideal choice for keepers pursuing Snow, Pearl, or other pale-toned combination lines.
