Description
The Pseudacanthicus pirarara, commonly known as the Scarlet Cactus Pleco or L025, is a striking species native to the Rio Xingu and its tributaries in Brazil. This fish can grow up to 18 inches and is distinguished by its spiny body covered in rows of pointed odontodes, as well as its vibrant red fins and pronounced black spots, giving it a dramatic appearance. Males feature more odontodal growth on their fins, especially on the pectorals. These fish are known for their “hooded” eyes, which give them an almost menacing look. A member of the Acanthicus clade, Pseudacanthicus pirarara thrives in larger aquariums and is best suited for experienced hobbyists due to its size and care requirements.
