Description

Leopard Gecko (Bell Sunglow)

Scientific Name: Eublepharis macularius
Common Name: Leopard Gecko (Bell Sunglow)

Species Overview

Size: Adult Leopard Geckos typically reach 8–10 inches (20–25 cm) in total length. They are sturdy, medium-sized geckos well adapted to arid environments.

Appearance: The Bell Sunglow morph is a bright, warm-toned Leopard Gecko combining the Bell Albino gene with high-intensity orange and reduced spotting. Sunglows display rich yellow, tangerine, or golden-orange colours across the body, with minimal dark markings and a clean, vibrant look. The tail often shows pale orange or soft tangerine tones. Eyes are pinkish to reddish, characteristic of Bell Albino lineage. Overall, Bell Sunglows have a smooth, glossy appearance with amplified warmth in their colouration.

Distribution: The species originates from the rocky deserts and grasslands of Pakistan, Afghanistan, northwestern India, and parts of Iran.

Habitat: In the wild, Leopard Geckos shelter in burrows during the day and emerge at night to hunt. They are naturally adapted to dry, warm conditions and thrive in enclosures designed with these environmental features.

Behaviour: Leopard Geckos are nocturnal, gentle, and curious. They adapt readily to routine care and typically tolerate handling well. Their calm demeanor and predictable behaviour make them excellent reptiles for both new and experienced keepers.

Captive Care

Enclosure: Provide a terrestrial enclosure at least 24 inches × 18 inches × 12 inches (60 × 45 × 30 cm). Include warm, cool, and humid hides, along with a naturalistic, diggable substrate such as sandy soil or a clay-based blend.

Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a warm side of 88–92°F (31–33°C) and a cool side around 75–80°F (24–27°C). Nighttime temperatures may drop to 70–74°F (21–23°C). Humidity should remain around 30–40%, with a humid hide at 60–70% for shedding. A thermostat is essential for regulating heat.

Lighting: Leopard Geckos benefit from low-level UVB (2–5%) to support metabolic health. Provide a 12-hour light/dark cycle.

Diet: Feed gut-loaded insects such as crickets, roaches, mealworms, and silkworms. Adults should be fed every other day; juveniles daily. Dust prey with calcium and multivitamin supplements regularly. Provide fresh water at all times.

Behaviour in Captivity: Leopard Geckos settle well into consistent routines and are generally hardy, long-lived animals. They may live 15–20 years or more with proper care.

Special Considerations: Bell Sunglows do not require special care beyond standard Leopard Gecko husbandry. Their reduced spotting and bright coloration do not influence behaviour or health needs.

Taxonomy Note

The Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius) belongs to the family Eublepharidae and is one of the most selectively bred reptile species worldwide. Its genetic diversity has produced hundreds of morphs, with albino and orange-enhancing lines being among the most popular.

Genetics Note

The Bell Sunglow morph combines:

  • Bell Albino (recessive) – Removes black pigment and produces pinkish to reddish eyes.

  • Sunglow (polygenic / line-bred) – Reduces dark spotting and enhances orange and yellow tones, creating a vivid, clean appearance.

These genetics affect colour only and do not alter care requirements.
