Description

Leopard Gecko (Bold Stripe Jungle)

Scientific Name: Eublepharis macularius
Common Name: Leopard Gecko (Bold Stripe Jungle)

Species Overview

Size: Adult Leopard Geckos typically reach 8–10 inches (20–25 cm) in total length. They are medium-sized, robust geckos well adapted to arid habitats.

Appearance: The Bold Stripe Jungle morph combines two visually distinct pattern traits. The Bold Stripe trait produces thick, dark lateral striping along the sides of the body and tail, often with high contrast and reduced dorsal spotting. The Jungle trait disrupts normal banding, creating irregular, broken, or swirling patterns across the body and tail. Together, these traits create a uniquely patterned gecko featuring strong lateral stripes overlaid with unpredictable jungle-style patterning. The result is a striking, high-contrast animal with dynamic markings and a smooth, beaded skin texture. Colour expression varies from yellow and orange tones to deeper hues depending on individual lineage.

Distribution: Leopard Geckos originate from Pakistan, Afghanistan, northwestern India, and Iran.

Habitat: In their natural range, Leopard Geckos inhabit rocky deserts and scrublands, sheltering in burrows during the day. Captive environments should replicate these warm, semi-arid conditions with secure hiding areas and stable heating.

Behaviour: Leopard Geckos are nocturnal, gentle, and inquisitive. They tolerate calm handling and thrive under consistent care routines. They display natural behaviours such as burrowing, exploring at night, and active insect hunting.

Captive Care

Enclosure: Provide a terrestrial enclosure measuring at least 24 inches × 18 inches × 12 inches (60 × 45 × 30 cm). Include warm, cool, and humid hides. Use a sandy soil or clay-based substrate that supports natural digging behaviour.

Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a warm side of 88–92°F (31–33°C) and a cool side around 75–80°F (24–27°C). Nighttime temperatures may drop to 70–74°F (21–23°C). Keep ambient humidity at 30–40%, with a humid hide elevated to 60–70% for shedding. Regulate heat sources with a thermostat.

Lighting: Low-level UVB (2–5%) supports metabolic and bone health. Provide a 12-hour day/night cycle.

Diet: Feed gut-loaded insects such as roaches, crickets, mealworms, and silkworms. Adults are typically fed every other day, while juveniles require daily feedings. Dust all insects with calcium and multivitamin supplements. Fresh water should be available at all times.

Behaviour in Captivity: Leopard Geckos are resilient, steady feeders and thrive with predictable routines. They often live 15–20 years or more with proper care.

Special Considerations: Because both traits influence pattern rather than structure or health, no additional husbandry considerations are required.

Taxonomy Note

The Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius) is part of the family Eublepharidae and is one of the most selectively bred reptiles in captivity. Dozens of pattern and colour traits exist, with Bold Stripe and Jungle being among the most recognizable pattern variations.

Genetics Note

This morph combines two pattern traits:

  • Bold Stripe (polygenic / line-bred) – Produces strong, dark lateral striping and reduced dorsal patterning.

  • Jungle (dominant / incomplete dominant) – Breaks up traditional banding into irregular, swirling, or fragmented patterns.

These traits affect appearance only and do not alter standard Leopard Gecko care.
