Description
Leopard Gecko (Goblin)
Scientific Name: Eublepharis macularius
Common Name: Leopard Gecko (Goblin)
Species Overview
Size: Adult Leopard Geckos typically reach 8–10 inches (20–25 cm). They are medium-sized, sturdy lizards well adapted to arid environments.
Appearance: The Goblin line is a selectively bred project known for producing Leopard Geckos with deeper, richer green-toned pigments and contrasting darker pattern elements. Individuals often show olive, mossy green, or muted emerald tones along the body and sides, blending with yellow or orange base colours. Spotting can be variable but is commonly darker and more defined, producing a bold, earthy appearance. As with all line-bred traits, expression varies, but Goblin geckos are generally recognisable by their enhanced green hues and strong pattern contrast.
Distribution: Leopard Geckos are native to Pakistan, Afghanistan, northwestern India, and Iran.
Habitat: In the wild, they inhabit rocky deserts and scrublands, sheltering in burrows or under stones. In captivity, they thrive in warm, semi-arid environments with secure hiding spaces.
Behaviour: Leopard Geckos are nocturnal, calm, and adaptable. They tolerate gentle handling and display natural behaviours such as burrowing, exploring at night, and actively hunting insects.
Captive Care
Enclosure: Provide a terrestrial enclosure at least 24 inches × 18 inches × 12 inches (60 × 45 × 30 cm). Include warm, cool, and humid hides. A sandy soil or clay-based naturalistic substrate supports digging behaviour.
Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a warm side of 88–92°F (31–33°C) and a cool side between 75–80°F (24–27°C). Nighttime temperatures may drop to 70–74°F (21–23°C). Keep humidity around 30–40%, with a humid hide elevated to 60–70% for shedding. Always regulate heating elements with a thermostat.
Lighting: Provide low-level UVB (2–5%) and a consistent 12-hour day/night light cycle.
Diet: Offer gut-loaded insects such as roaches, crickets, silkworms, and mealworms. Adults are typically fed every other day; juveniles daily. Dust all prey with calcium and multivitamin supplements. Fresh water should always be available.
Behaviour in Captivity: Leopard Geckos are hardy and predictable, thriving with stable routines and proper husbandry. They commonly live 15–20 years or more.
Special Considerations: As a line-bred trait, Goblin expression varies between individuals. No special care requirements are associated with this morph.
Taxonomy Note
The Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius) belongs to the family Eublepharidae. Selective breeding has produced numerous colour and pattern lines, including green-toned projects such as Goblin.
Genetics Note
This morph features one line-bred trait:
-
Goblin (polygenic / line-bred) – Selectively bred to enhance green pigmentation and strong pattern contrast.
This trait influences appearance only and does not alter standard Leopard Gecko care.
