Description

Leopard Gecko (Black Mandarin Black Night)

Scientific Name: Eublepharis macularius
Common Name: Leopard Gecko (Black Mandarin Black Night)

Species Overview

Size: Adult Leopard Geckos generally reach 8–10 inches (20–25 cm) in total length, with males tending to be slightly bulkier. They are medium-sized, sturdy geckos well adapted to arid environments.

Appearance: This striking combination brings together two powerful line-bred colour traits. Black Night produces one of the darkest colour expressions in Leopard Geckos, often resulting in deep charcoal to nearly jet-black tones with significantly reduced spotting. The Mandarin trait enhances orange pigmentation, adding warm contrast, especially along the head and flanks. When combined, the result is a bold, dramatic animal with rich, dark tones highlighted by subtle orange warmth. Eyes are typically dark, and the body appears sleek with smooth, bead-like scales.

Distribution: The species is native to arid and rocky regions of Pakistan, Afghanistan, northwestern India, and Iran.

Habitat: In the wild, Leopard Geckos shelter in burrows and rock crevices to escape daytime heat. In captivity, they thrive in warm, semi-arid environments that replicate these natural conditions.

Behaviour: Leopard Geckos are nocturnal, calm, and curious. They adapt well to handling and display natural behaviours such as burrowing, exploring after dark, and hunting live insects. Their dependable temperament makes them suitable for keepers of all experience levels.

Captive Care

Enclosure: Provide a terrestrial enclosure measuring at least 24 inches × 18 inches × 12 inches (60 × 45 × 30 cm). A warm hide, cool hide, and humid hide are all essential. Use sandy soil or a clay-based substrate that allows natural digging behaviour.

Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a warm side of 88–92°F (31–33°C) with a cool side around 75–80°F (24–27°C). Night temperatures may safely drop to 70–74°F (21–23°C). Keep ambient humidity at 30–40%, with a humid hide at 60–70% for shedding. Use a thermostat for precise heat regulation.

Lighting: Low-level UVB (2–5%) supports metabolic health and natural rhythms. Provide a 12-hour day/night cycle with soft daytime lighting.

Diet: Feed gut-loaded insects such as roaches, crickets, mealworms, and silkworms. Adults should be fed every other day; juveniles require daily feedings. Supplement all prey with calcium and multivitamins. Provide fresh water at all times.

Behaviour in Captivity: Leopard Geckos settle well into routine care and exhibit predictable feeding behaviour. They are hardy reptiles capable of living 15–20 years or more with proper husbandry.

Special Considerations: Both Mandarin and Black Night are line-bred traits. Breeding projects involving these lines may require careful selection to maintain healthy structure and coloration. Husbandry needs remain the same as any Leopard Gecko.

Taxonomy Note

The Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius) is a member of the family Eublepharidae and one of the most genetically diverse reptiles in captivity. Its popularity has led to extensive selective breeding, producing a wide range of colour, pattern, and contrast-enhancing traits.

Genetics Note

The Black Mandarin Black Night morph combines two line-bred traits:

  • Black Night (polygenic / line-bred) – Produces deep, dark body tones with dramatically reduced spotting.

  • Mandarin (polygenic / line-bred) – Intensifies orange pigmentation, especially on the head and body.

These traits develop over multiple generations of selective breeding and affect appearance only, without altering care requirements.
