Description

Leopard Gecko (Mack Snow Bold Stripe)

Scientific Name: Eublepharis macularius
Common Name: Leopard Gecko (Mack Snow Bold Stripe)

Species Overview

Size: Adult Leopard Geckos typically reach 8–10 inches (20–25 cm). They are medium-sized, durable lizards well adapted to warm, arid habitats.

Appearance: The Mack Snow Bold Stripe combines the reduced-yellow, cool-toned influence of the Mack Snow gene with the striking lateral striping of the Bold Stripe line. Individuals typically display crisp contrast between pale greys or whites and strong, dark markings running horizontally along the body. These stripes often begin near the neck and continue toward the tail, producing a clean, organized pattern that differs from typical banded Leopard Geckos. Colour expression ranges from soft lavender-grey to pastel yellow depending on lineage strength. High-quality examples maintain bold, well-defined stripes throughout adulthood.

Distribution: Leopard Geckos originate from Pakistan, Afghanistan, northwestern India, and Iran.

Habitat: In the wild, they live in rocky deserts and scrublands, seeking shelter in burrows or crevices. In captivity, they thrive in warm, semi-arid environments with secure hiding areas and stable temperatures.

Behaviour: Leopard Geckos are nocturnal, calm, and well suited to routine care. They display natural behaviours such as nighttime exploring, burrowing, and active hunting.

Captive Care

Enclosure: Provide at least a 24 inches × 18 inches × 12 inches (60 × 45 × 30 cm) terrestrial enclosure with warm, cool, and humid hides. A naturalistic substrate such as sandy soil or a clay-based blend supports digging behaviour.

Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a warm end of 88–92°F (31–33°C) and a cool end around 75–80°F (24–27°C). Nighttime temperatures may drop to 70–74°F (21–23°C). Keep ambient humidity at 30–40%, with a humid hide at 60–70% for shedding. Always use a thermostat to regulate heat sources.

Lighting: Low-level UVB (2–5%) supports skeletal and metabolic health. A consistent 12-hour day/night cycle is recommended.

Diet: Offer gut-loaded roaches, crickets, mealworms, and silkworms. Feed adults every other day and juveniles daily. Dust prey with calcium and multivitamins. Provide fresh water at all times.

Behaviour in Captivity: Leopard Geckos are hardy, predictable animals that adapt easily to routine care. Lifespans of 15–20 years or more are common with proper husbandry.

Special Considerations: As a combination of one genetic trait and one line-bred trait, pattern clarity varies. Some individuals express thicker or more continuous striping depending on lineage quality. Care requirements remain the same as for standard Leopard Geckos.

Taxonomy Note

The Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius) belongs to the family Eublepharidae. Pattern-focused lines such as Bold Stripe have been selectively bred for generations, and when paired with colour-modifying genes like Mack Snow, they create reliable, high-contrast visual outcomes.

Genetics Note

Mack Snow (incomplete dominant)
Reduces yellow pigmentation in hatchlings and produces cool, pale tones that accentuate high-contrast patterns.

Bold Stripe (polygenic / line-bred)
Selected for strong, horizontal striping running along the sides of the body, forming a distinctive lateral pattern unlike standard banding.

These traits influence appearance only and do not alter standard care requirements.
