Description
Leopard Gecko (Mack Snow)
Scientific Name: Eublepharis macularius
Common Name: Leopard Gecko (Mack Snow)
Species Overview
Size: Adult Leopard Geckos typically measure 8–10 inches (20–25 cm). They are medium-sized, hardy reptiles well adapted to warm, arid environments.
Appearance: The Mack Snow morph is known for its cool-toned, reduced-yellow coloration, especially pronounced in juveniles. Hatchlings and young geckos display crisp black and white banding rather than the typical yellow tones seen in wild-type animals. As they mature, many develop light pastel yellows or creams, though they remain noticeably cooler in tone than standard Leopard Geckos. Pattern expression ranges from bold banding in juveniles to spots and rosettes in adults. The overall look is clean, high-contrast, and visually distinct from typical yellow-based geckos.
Distribution: Leopard Geckos originate from Pakistan, Afghanistan, northwestern India, and Iran.
Habitat: In nature, they inhabit rocky deserts and scrublands, using burrows for daytime shelter. In captivity, they thrive in warm, semi-arid setups with secure hiding areas.
Behaviour: Leopard Geckos are nocturnal, calm, and responsive to routine care. They tolerate gentle handling and display natural behaviours such as burrowing, hunting insects, and nighttime exploration.
Captive Care
Enclosure: Provide at least a 24 inches × 18 inches × 12 inches (60 × 45 × 30 cm) terrestrial enclosure. Include a warm hide, cool hide, and humid hide. A sandy soil or clay-based naturalistic substrate supports digging.
Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a warm side of 88–92°F (31–33°C) and a cool side of 75–80°F (24–27°C). Nighttime temperatures may decrease to 70–74°F (21–23°C). Ambient humidity should remain at 30–40%, with a humid hide raised to 60–70% to support shedding. Regulate heating with a thermostat.
Lighting: Provide low-level UVB (2–5%) and maintain a 12-hour day/night cycle.
Diet: Offer gut-loaded insects such as roaches, crickets, mealworms, and silkworms. Adults eat every other day; juveniles daily. Dust prey with calcium and multivitamins. Clean water should always be available.
Behaviour in Captivity: Leopard Geckos are reliable, long-lived reptiles that adapt well to consistent care routines. They commonly live 15–20 years or more with proper husbandry.
Special Considerations: Colour change from hatchling to adult is expected. Mack Snow geckos may appear dramatically different as they mature, with many gaining slight yellowing or softening of their juvenile contrast.
Taxonomy Note
The Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius) belongs to the family Eublepharidae. The Mack Snow trait is one of the most widely recognised single-gene mutations in the species.
Genetics Note
This morph includes:
-
Mack Snow (co-dominant / incomplete dominant) – Reduces warm pigmentation and produces black-and-white hatchlings. Adults typically retain cooler tones and reduced yellows.
This genetic trait affects only appearance and does not alter Leopard Gecko husbandry.
