Description

Narrow Mouth Reed Frog

Scientific Name: Hyperolius concolor
Common Name: Narrow Mouth Reed Frog, Variable Reed Frog

Species Overview

Size: Adults typically reach 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 4 cm), with females slightly larger.

Appearance: The Narrow Mouth Reed Frog is a slender, delicate species displaying a range of colours from bright green and yellow to brown or tan, depending on locality and mood. Many individuals show a thin light dorsolateral stripe, fine speckling, or subtle pattern shifts. The ventral surface is usually pale, while the throat in males may appear darker during calling. Limbs are thin and semi-translucent with small toe pads ideal for gripping reeds and narrow vegetation. Eyes are pale with horizontal pupils, adding to their alert, reed-perching appearance.

Distribution: Found across West and Central Africa, including Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Cameroon.

Habitat: This species inhabits wetlands, flooded grasslands, marsh edges, savanna pools, and forest–savanna transition zones. They are strongly associated with tall grasses, reeds, and shrubs near temporary water sources used for breeding.

Behaviour: Primarily nocturnal and agile, Narrow Mouth Reed Frogs call enthusiastically during rainy periods, forming loose choruses in reed beds. They are quick, light-bodied climbers and rely on fine vegetation for perching. During the day, they rest in shaded grasses or shrubs.

Captive Care

Enclosure: A single adult or small group thrives in a 12 × 12 × 18 inches (30 × 30 × 45 cm) enclosure, while larger groups benefit from an 18 × 18 × 24 inches (45 × 45 × 60 cm) setup. Provide tall, narrow climbing structures such as reeds, thin branches, and dense grass-like plants. Use a moisture-retentive substrate such as coco fibre, soil blends, or sphagnum to maintain humidity while allowing light drying cycles. Include a shallow water basin for hydration.

Temperature and Humidity:
Ambient temperature: 74 to 80°F (23 to 27°C)
Warm area: up to 82°F (28°C)
Night temperature: 68 to 72°F (20 to 22°C)
Humidity: 70 to 90%, supported by frequent misting and strong ventilation.

Lighting: Provide low to moderate UVB (2 to 5%) with soft, diffused lighting.

Diet: Offer very small insects such as fruit flies, pinhead crickets, springtails, isopods, and small roaches. Supplement prey with calcium and multivitamins.

Behaviour in Captivity: Narrow Mouth Reed Frogs are lively, vocal, and highly active at night. They prefer slender vertical perches and dense plant cover. Their calls can be frequent during humid evenings. Handling should be avoided due to their delicate size and sensitive skin.

Special Considerations:
• Use wet, powder-free gloves or a soft, damp net if handling is absolutely necessary.
• Provide many narrow, reed-like perches—broad leaves are less preferred.
• Ensure strong airflow to avoid stagnant humidity.
• Avoid oversaturated substrate; light moisture cycles mimic their natural microhabitats.
• Use only dechlorinated water for misting and hydration.
• Seal small gaps securely—these frogs are extremely small and quick.

Taxonomy Note

Hyperolius concolor is part of the large African reed frog genus Hyperolius, known for bright colours, loud choruses, and complex regional variation. This species is identified by its slender build, narrow head, and affinity for reed-dominated habitats.

Genetics Note

There are no recognised morphs for Hyperolius concolor. Natural variation occurs in dorsal colour intensity, speckling, and stripe visibility, but none represent defined genetic morphs.
