Description

Serrasalmus elongatus, commonly known as the elongated piranha or pike piranha, is a slender and elongated species within the S. humeralis group. Often found in its native regions, this smaller piranha species is locally referred to as caribe pinche, meaning "mediocre piranha." This name has led to various trade names like "Pingke piranha" and "Serrasalmus pinke," though these are not scientifically recognized.

Adult S. elongatus inhabit deeper, white waters, while juveniles are typically found in shallow, blackwater lagoons. Known for their aggressive nature and notorious fin-biting tendencies, these piranhas are best kept in a single-species tank. While group housing may be attempted in very large setups, it’s generally advisable to provide them with a solitary environment to minimize aggression and stress.

Identifiable by their elongated body shape, S. elongatus features an iridescent silver coloration with subtle yellow and gold hues. Their large eyes and visible teeth further distinguish them from other rounder piranha species. Sexing this fish can be quite challenging, and there are no known instances of spawning in captivity.

With its striking appearance and unique behavior, Serrasalmus elongatus can be a captivating choice for dedicated aquarists who can provide the proper care and environment for this remarkable fish. Keeping them in a species-only tank ensures a more stable and stress-free habitat, allowing them to thrive.
