Description
Geophagus pyrocephalus is one of the most popular and beautiful eartheaters in the aquarium hobby, but was only recently scientifically described after years in circulation. They were formerly traded as Geophagus sp. 'Orange Head' or G. sp. 'Tapajos'. As their name would imply, they develop lovely orange to red heads, especially pronounced in males. They also have beautiful red and blue streaked fins, and can develop long tassels/streamers from the unpaired fins in some specimens. Like most geos they are social and do well in groups, particularly a male and a large harem of females. A sand substrate is best to allow these sand-sifting cichlids to display their most natural behaviour.
These are juveniles around 3" long that are starting to develop their colour.
