Description

Sinaloan Milksnake (Albino)

Scientific Name: Lampropeltis triangulum sinaloae
Common Name: Sinaloan Milksnake

Species Overview

Size: Adults typically reach 3.5–4.5 feet (1.0–1.4 m) in length, with a slender, smooth body and glossy scales.

Appearance: The Albino Sinaloan Milksnake is a vivid, high-contrast morph that replaces the dark black banding of the wild type with bright white or yellow rings. The remaining red pigment intensifies into bold scarlet or orange tones, producing a clean, tri-coloured pattern of red, white, and yellow. This combination gives the snake a striking, almost glowing appearance under natural or artificial light. The eyes are bright red, a hallmark of the Albino gene, and the scales maintain their signature polished sheen. The Albino form enhances the natural beauty of the Sinaloan Milksnake while retaining its classic banded pattern, making it one of the most recognizable morphs of the species.

Distribution: Originates from selective captive breeding of the Sinaloan Milksnake, a subspecies native to western Mexico, primarily in Sinaloa, Sonora, and Chihuahua.

Habitat: Sinaloan Milksnakes inhabit dry scrublands, forest edges, and agricultural areas across northwestern Mexico. In captivity, this morph thrives in naturalistic terrariums with soft substrate, climbing branches, and secure hiding areas.

Behaviour: These snakes are calm, intelligent, and easy to handle once acclimated. They are hardy, dependable feeders and thrive under consistent, well-maintained conditions.

Captive Care

Enclosure: Provide an enclosure at least 3–4 feet in length for adults. Include multiple hides, climbing décor, and smooth furnishings. A naturalistic substrate such as soil, coconut fibre, or aspen allows burrowing and helps maintain humidity.

Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a daytime gradient of 78–85°F (25–29°C) with a basking area near 88–90°F (31–32°C). Allow nighttime drops to around 70°F (21°C). Maintain humidity between 50–65%, offering a humid hide during shedding.

Diet: Offer frozen-thawed rodents every 7–10 days for juveniles and every 10–14 days for adults. Sinaloan Milksnakes are strong, reliable feeders.

Behaviour in Captivity: Active and curious, these snakes are known for their alertness and calm temperament. Their brilliant coloration makes them ideal for display, and their reliability makes them suitable for both new and experienced keepers.

Special Considerations: Milksnakes should always be housed individually, as they may consume other snakes.

Genetics Note

Albino (Recessive): A recessive trait that completely removes black pigment, replacing it with white or yellow banding while intensifying red pigmentation. The result is a brilliant red-and-white (or red-and-yellow) snake with bright red eyes and high visual contrast.

Genetic Expression: The Albino morph in Sinaloan Milksnakes is stable and well-established, with line-bred variations showing subtle differences in red tone (ranging from bright orange-red to deep crimson) and white band clarity.

Genetic Combination Summary

The Sinaloan Milksnake (Albino) expresses a single recessive trait:

  • Albino (Recessive): Removes all black pigment, resulting in vivid red and white or red and yellow coloration with clean contrast and bright red eyes.

This morph enhances the species’ natural beauty and creates one of the most visually iconic patterns in the milksnake group. The Albino Sinaloan Milksnake is highly regarded and well-recognized for its vibrant coloration, easy care, and strong feeding response, making it a favourite among both new keepers and established breeders.
