Mastacembelus armatus is a large spiny eel and an aquarium classic. Hailing from South and Southeast Asia, these spiny eels reach about 18-24" in length, although generally on the smaller side of that range in aquaria. These fish are generally peaceful with any tankmates too large to fit in their mouths; good tankmates would include larger schooling fishes like some tetras and rainbowfish, or medium sized, peaceful cichlids. Take care that these picky, slow eaters are able to compete for food, though; target/tong-feeding of live, fresh, or frozen foods is generally required for long term success as these fish do not usually accept dried food options.
These are subadult specimens about 6" long.
