Description
Variable Kingsnake (Normal)
Scientific Name: Lampropeltis mexicana thayeri
Common Name: Variable Kingsnake, Thayer’s Kingsnake
Species Overview
Size: Adults typically reach 2.5–3.5 feet (0.75–1.1 m) in length, with a slender, agile body and smooth, glossy scales.
Appearance: The Normal Variable Kingsnake is named for its exceptional diversity in colour and pattern. Individuals may exhibit a wide range of appearances, including grey, tan, orange, olive, or cream backgrounds with darker blotches that vary in size, shape, and contrast. Some display bold, saddle-like markings reminiscent of other kingsnakes, while others show more fragmented or chain-linked patterns. The variability of this species makes it one of the most visually intriguing members of the Lampropeltis genus. The eyes are dark with copper or gold highlights, and the smooth, glossy scales lend the species a sleek, refined appearance. This natural polymorphism has made the Variable Kingsnake a favourite among breeders and collectors who appreciate its unpredictable beauty.
Distribution: Native to the highlands of northeastern Mexico, particularly in Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas.
Habitat: Variable Kingsnakes inhabit rocky slopes, semi-arid forests, and grassland valleys in northern Mexico. In captivity, they thrive in naturalistic terrariums with soft substrate, climbing branches, and secure hiding areas.
Behaviour: These snakes are calm, alert, and intelligent. They are quick to acclimate to handling and captivity, showing strong feeding responses and adaptable temperaments that make them suitable for keepers of all experience levels.
Captive Care
Enclosure: Provide an enclosure at least 3 feet × 18 inches × 18 inches for adults. Include multiple hides, climbing décor, and smooth furnishings. A naturalistic substrate such as soil, coconut fibre, or aspen allows burrowing and helps regulate humidity.
Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a daytime gradient of 78–85°F (25–29°C) with a basking area near 88–90°F (31–32°C). Allow nighttime drops to around 70°F (21°C). Maintain humidity between 45–60%, offering a humid hide during shedding.
Diet: Offer frozen-thawed rodents every 7–10 days for juveniles and every 10–14 days for adults. Variable Kingsnakes are strong feeders and rarely refuse meals.
Behaviour in Captivity: Active, inquisitive, and calm, these snakes are easy to manage and thrive under consistent care. Their adaptability and naturally striking variety make them excellent display animals.
Special Considerations: Kingsnakes should always be housed individually, as they may consume other snakes.
Genetics Note
The Variable Kingsnake is one of the most polymorphic species within the Lampropeltis genus, displaying a remarkable range of colours and patterns across both wild and captive populations. Selective breeding has further refined these natural variations, producing distinct lines such as the Green Phase, Jaguar Phase, Orange Phase, and Tan forms. These selectively bred traits are polygenic, emphasizing specific tones or patterns through multi-generational refinement. Naturally occurring differences across localities also contribute to the species’ immense visual diversity, making it a favourite among collectors and breeders alike.
Species Summary
The Variable Kingsnake (Lampropeltis mexicana thayeri) is one of the most valued and well-recognized members of the Lampropeltis group. Its adaptable nature, moderate size, and extraordinary range of natural and selectively bred colour forms make it an ideal species for both new hobbyists and dedicated breeders seeking variety and elegance in their collections.
