Description
Colombian Rainbow Boa (CRB)
Epicrates maurus
Morph: Albino “High Contrast”
Species Overview
-
Size: Colombian rainbow boas are generally smaller than Brazilian rainbow boas, averaging 4–6 feet (1.2–1.8 m) as adults. Females tend toward the larger end of the range, while males remain smaller and more slender.
-
Appearance: The Albino “High Contrast” morph removes melanin, resulting in bright yellows, oranges, and whites contrasted with clean, sharp patterns. The “High Contrast” label refers to individuals selectively bred to emphasize bold, crisp saddles and pattern separation rather than muddled coloration.
-
Distribution: Native to northern South America, primarily Colombia and surrounding regions.
-
Habitat: Found in humid forests, savannah edges, and near river systems, tolerating seasonal shifts in temperature and humidity.
-
Behaviour: Nocturnal ambush predators that hunt small mammals, birds, and reptiles. Juveniles are more inclined to climb, while adults are primarily terrestrial.
Captive Care
-
Enclosure: Adults thrive in enclosures at least 4′ × 2′ × 2′, with secure hides, climbing branches, cork bark, and foliage. Colombian rainbow boas benefit from naturalistic or bioactive setups that help maintain humidity.
-
Temperature & Humidity: Maintain an ambient gradient of 78–82°F (25–28°C) with a basking spot around 86–88°F (30–31°C). Nighttime drops to 74–76°F (23–24°C) are acceptable. Humidity should remain 70–85%, with regular misting and a large water dish to support hydration and proper shedding.
-
Diet: Juveniles feed every 7–10 days on small rodents; adults every 14–21 days. Meals should be appropriately sized to avoid obesity.
-
Behaviour in Captivity: Colombian rainbow boas can be defensive when young but often settle with consistent care. They are hardy once established but, like all rainbow boas, require consistent humidity to thrive.
-
Special Considerations: While morphs alter colour and pattern, their core care requirements remain identical to normal Colombian rainbow boas.
Genetics/Lineage Note
The Albino “High Contrast” Colombian Rainbow Boa involves:
-
Albino (recessive, expressed): Removes melanin, producing bright yellows, oranges, and whites with red or pink eyes.
-
“High Contrast” (selectively bred line): A breeding focus rather than a separate gene, emphasizing sharp, bold saddle patterns and reduced blushing/fading.
