Description
Corn Snake (Tessera het. Scaleless Strawberry)
Scientific Name: Pantherophis guttatus
Common Name: Corn Snake
Species Overview
Size: Adults typically reach 3–5 feet (0.9–1.5 m) in length, with a slender, muscular build and smooth, glossy scales.
Appearance: The Tessera het. Scaleless Strawberry Corn Snake is a warm, visually balanced morph that combines the clean linear striping of the Tessera gene with the gentle reddish tones of Strawberry, while carrying the Scaleless gene. The Tessera pattern creates a crisp, unbroken dorsal stripe with evenly spaced side markings that accentuate the body’s length and structure. The Strawberry gene, a recessive trait related to Hypo, softens dark pigmentation and enriches red and pink hues, often giving hatchlings a bright coral tone that matures into softer reds and oranges with age. Although the Scaleless gene is not expressed in this heterozygous form, it carries the potential to produce smooth, scale-free offspring when paired with a compatible mate. The combination of warm colour and refined striping makes this morph an appealing choice for both collectors and breeders.
Distribution: A selectively bred form of the Corn Snake (P. guttatus), developed through the combination of Tessera (dominant), Strawberry (recessive), and one copy of Scaleless (recessive carrier).
Habitat: Wild Corn Snakes inhabit a range of habitats across the southeastern United States, including forests, fields, and agricultural areas. In captivity, this morph thrives in naturalistic terrariums with soft substrate, climbing branches, and secure hiding areas.
Behaviour: Corn Snakes are crepuscular, showing peak activity at dawn and dusk. They are hardy, reliable feeders that adapt easily to consistent care routines, making them suitable for both display and breeding.
Captive Care
Enclosure: A 40-gallon terrarium (36” × 18” × 18”) or larger is ideal for adults. Use soft, moisture-retentive substrate such as soil, coconut fibre, or bioactive blends. Provide multiple hides, cork flats, and climbing décor to encourage natural behaviour and exploration.
Temperature & Humidity: Maintain a daytime gradient of 75–82°F (24–28°C) with a basking area around 86–88°F (30–31°C). Allow nighttime drops to 70°F (21°C). Keep humidity between 45–60%, and provide a humid hide or damp moss during shedding.
Diet: Offer frozen-thawed rodents approximately 1.25× the width of the snake’s mid-body. Feed juveniles every 7–10 days and adults every 10–14 days.
Behaviour in Captivity: Corn Snakes are calm, curious, and active during twilight hours. They thrive with consistent care, steady temperatures, and regular handling.
Special Considerations: The Tessera het. Scaleless Strawberry Corn Snake is valued for its warm colour palette and strong breeding potential. When paired with another Scaleless carrier or visual, it can produce Tessera Scaleless Strawberry offspring—snakes that retain the rich red tones and striping but feature a smooth, scale-free texture. This morph serves as an excellent foundation for breeding projects focused on red or pink Scaleless combinations.
Genetics Note
Tessera (Dominant): Produces a crisp, continuous dorsal stripe and symmetrical side markings.
Strawberry (Recessive): Enhances red and pink pigmentation while reducing black tones, creating a warmer, softer colour balance.
het. Scaleless (Recessive Carrier): Carries one copy of the Scaleless gene, which removes scales entirely when visual. (“het” is short for heterozygous, meaning one copy is carried but not expressed.)
Genetic Combination Summary
The Tessera het. Scaleless Strawberry Corn Snake expresses two visible traits and carries a third:
-
Tessera (Dominant): Creates refined, linear dorsal and lateral striping.
-
Strawberry (Recessive): Deepens red and pink pigmentation for a rich, warm colour tone.
-
het. Scaleless (Recessive Carrier): Provides the potential for smooth, scale-free offspring when bred with compatible partners.
Together, these genetics produce a clean, vivid Corn Snake with soft red hues and high genetic versatility. The Tessera het. Scaleless Strawberry Corn Snake is both visually appealing and strategically valuable for projects focused on red-toned or Scaleless line development.
