Description

Southern White-lipped Python

Leiopython fredparkeri
Common Names: Southern White-lipped Python, D’Albert’s Python (Southern Form)

Species Overview

  • Size: Adults typically measure 7–9 feet (2.1–2.7 m), with large females occasionally surpassing 10 feet. They are slightly heavier-bodied than their northern counterparts but retain a sleek, muscular build.

  • Appearance:

    • Like all White-lipped Pythons, Southerns are famous for their high-gloss black or chocolate-brown dorsal scales with an intense rainbow iridescence that gleams under light.

    • Their white lips provide a sharp contrast, giving them their common name.

    • Southerns tend to have darker overall tones, with more contrast between the upper and lower body. The belly is often dark gray to blackish, unlike the lighter cream/yellow underside seen in Northerns.

    • Heads are long and angular with smooth, reflective scales, enhancing their dramatic look.

  • Distribution: Native to the southern regions of New Guinea, including both Papua New Guinea and Indonesian Papua.

  • Habitat: Found in humid rainforests, river basins, and swampy lowlands, often near water sources. They are both terrestrial and semi-arboreal.

  • Behaviour: Predatory constrictors feeding on mammals, birds, and reptiles. In the wild, they are primarily nocturnal ambush hunters.

Captive Care

  • Enclosure: Adults require large enclosures, ideally 6–8 ft × 2–3 ft × 2 ft, with ample floor space and sturdy climbing opportunities. Provide secure hides at both ends of the temperature gradient.

  • Temperature & Humidity:

    • Basking area: 88–90°F (31–32°C).

    • Ambient temps: 76–82°F (24–28°C).

    • Nighttime drop: 72–75°F (22–24°C).

    • Humidity: Maintain 60–80%, with regular misting. A large water basin for soaking is highly recommended.

  • Diet: Juveniles feed on hopper mice or small rats every 5–7 days; adults should be offered medium to large rats every 10–14 days. Very large adults may take rabbits on occasion.

  • Behaviour in Captivity: Southerns are known for being defensive and unpredictable, especially when young. Many individuals mellow somewhat with consistent husbandry, but they generally remain more challenging than Northerns, making them best suited for experienced keepers.

  • Special Considerations: Stress-sensitive species—provide visual barriers, naturalistic décor, and minimal handling to ensure long-term health.

Genetics Note

  • The Southern White-lipped Python is a locality form of Liasis albertisii.

  • There are no established morphs; they are valued for their pure locality bloodlines and wild beauty.

  • Distinguishing features from Northerns include darker ventral colouration and generally heavier build, though both are iridescent and striking.

The Southern White-lipped Python is one of the most dramatic-looking snakes in the python world, admired for its dark, iridescent scales and sharp white lips, but its defensive nature makes it a species recommended for experienced keepers who appreciate its natural elegance.
