Basic Info
Scientific name: Gecarcinus ruricola
Common names: Purple land crab, black land crab
Lifespan: 10–20 years
Adult size: 8–12 cm carapace width
Temperament: Shy, mostly nocturnal


Habitat Requirements
Tank size: Minimum 20-gallon long for one crab.
Substrate: Deep mix of eco-earth, sand, and moss (15–20 cm deep). Keep moist, not soaked.
Humidity: 75–90% (mist daily).
Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F).
Lighting: Moderate, with a 12-hour day/night cycle.
Hiding: Provide caves, coconut shells, and leaves. Secure lid—escape artists!


Water
Provide two shallow dishes:
1. Freshwater (dechlorinated)
2. Saltwater (marine aquarium salt, not table salt)
Keep both clean and easy to access.


Diet
Omnivorous scavenger.
Staple foods: Fruits (apple, mango, papaya), leafy greens, veggies (carrot, zucchini).
Protein: Fish flakes, shrimp pellets, insects, cooked fish or egg.
Calcium: Cuttlebone or crushed eggshell.
Feed daily or every other day. Remove leftovers.


Molting
They burrow and hide during molting—do not disturb.
Ensure deep, moist substrate for safe molting.

Social Behavior
Can be kept in groups with space and hiding spots.
Watch for aggression and provide separate burrows.

Health & Maintenance
Stress signs: Lethargy, loss of appetite.
Common issues: Dehydration, bacterial infections, calcium deficiency.
Spot clean regularly; replace substrate every few months.


Important
This species is land-based and needs humidity—not deep water.
Avoid keeping in a fully aquatic setup.
